Pearl Harbor National Memorial

On December 7, 1941, Dwight Eisenhower was a fifty-one-year-old Bvt. Brigadier General at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. The events of that day would forever change both Eisenhower’s life and the course of world history.

The Ford Island CPO (Chief Petty Officer's) Bungalows Neighborhood and Battleship Row is a part of Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawai’i. The cultural landscape is a tangible reminder of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. It is also an early example of a twentieth-century U.S. Navy installation in the Pacific, beginning with development of the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in 1902.

Only one woman in American history – Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin – ever cast a ballot in support of the 19th Amendment. In 1916, Rankin represented the citizens of Montana in the U.S. House of Representatives, and she wanted American women nationwide to enjoy the benefits of suffrage. “If I am remembered for no other act, I want to be remembered as the only woman who ever voted to give women the right to vote,” Rankin said.

The striking photo of Katherine Ah Lan Lowe and four other women looking determined as they hold a powerful fire hose steady in the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is familiar to many as an image of female heroism in World War II.

On October 13, 2017, Navy Region Hawaii hosted a bell ringing ceremony at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to celebrate. Following the bell ringing was the dedication of the new Lone Sailor statue on the visitor center grounds. Happy Birthday US Navy!

The 442nd RCT and 100th Battalion make up the segregated unit of the US Military for Japanese Americans during WWII.

Working with Scientists in Parks, a program that partners early career scientists with projects in National Park units, Claire Kubacki began work on a plant program that will benefit the historic and cultural landscape of Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The goals of the project are to take cuttings of the historic trees and shrubs around the chief petty officer bungalows in order to propagate the very plants that stood witness to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

When you are a military spouse, there are moments that you look forward to where you can stand beside your spouse mark milestones together. One thing I have learned after being a military spouse for nearly a decade is that seizing the moment is important, because your circumstances will change. This is one of those moments.
